  • This will be the first Test meeting between Afghanistan and Ireland; indeed, it will be just the second Test played overall for either nation.
  • Though this is their first meeting in the Test arena, Afghanistan have won 10 of their last 13 games against Ireland in all other format (L3) but will be out to avoid back-to-back defeats to them across all formats for the first time since 2017.
  • Afghanistan's only previous Test experience came in an innings defeat to India in June 2018; they dismissed India for 474 runs but were unable to peg back the deficit in their two innings.
  • A five-wicket loss to Pakistan during May 2018 in Dublin is Ireland's only experience at Test level thus far; Kevin O'Brien scoring Ireland's maiden Test century in the second innings after being forced to follow on.
  • This will be the first Test match played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun; however, four of the previous five men's international fixtures at the venue have been won by the side to lose the toss on the day.
  • Ireland have won two of their last three international fixtures across all formats and will now be looking to string together consecutive international wins for the first time since March 2018.
  • Yamin Ahmadzai (Afghanistan) took team-high figures of 3/51 in his side's only previous Test as they went on to dismiss India for a first innings total of 474 runs.
  • Ireland duo Paul Stirling (4,997) and William Porterfield (4,876) are both on the cusp of becoming the first players to reach 5,000 runs scored for Ireland across all international formats.
  • Rashid Khan (198) needs just two more wickets to become the first Afghanistan player to take 200 wickets across all international formats; only two other players have taken 100+ wickets for Afghanistan (Mohammad Nabi 188, Dawlat Zadran 142).
  • William Porterfield (Ireland) scored a competition-high 458 runs in the Inter-Provincial Championship 2018 and was the only player to register multiple centuries in the tournament (2).
