Kolkata Knight Riders finally ended their losing streak against Chennai Super Kings as they registered an emphatic win over defending champions in the IPL 2022 opener.
Under the leadership of young and dynamic Shreyas Iyer, KKR defeated the Ravindra Jadeja-led side by 6 wickets with nine balls to spare at Wankhede Stadium.
Chasing 132 at the Wankhede Stadium track was never going to be a big task for the Knight Riders and they did so in some style.
The new opening duo of Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane gave KKR a brisk start in the powerplay. With the foundation laid the middle-order batted well to prevent Super Kings bowlers from causing them much damage as the asking rate never went out of their hands.
Rahane was unlucky to have missed out on a well deserved fifty as he was removed by Mitchell Santner for 44.
Nitish Rana, captain Shreyas Iyer, Sam Billings also played impressive cameos and helped the Knights cruise home comfortably.
Dwayne Bravo, however, was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as the West Indies all-rounder returned with superb figures of 3-20. Billings was the third wicket for Bravo in the game and the Caribbean cricketer is now joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with Lasith Malinga with 160 scalps to his name.
Earlier in the day, MS Dhoni returned to action with a blistering half-century and helped his team post 131/5 in 20 overs.
The former CSK captain - who was playing after a gap of 5 months - scored an unbeaten 50 off 38 deliveries. The Super Kings had lost their top-five under 11 overs with just 61 runs on the board.
Along with the new captain, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni - who walked into the middle at number seven - took his time to settle down before exploding in the death overs. The duo hammered 47 runs in the last three overs and rescued CSK.
Dhoni and Jadeja shared an unbeaten partnership of 70 runs of 57 deliveries and helped CSK post a respectable total and give the bowlers a chance to put up a fight on a tricky surface.
Umesh Yadav (2-20), Varun Chakaravarthy (1-23) and Sunil Narine (0-15) bowled economically to keep CSK batters in check for the most part in the first innings.
FOUR! Adam Milne to Shreyas Iyer. Slower length ball, down leg side backing away Slog, well timed past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. KKR win by six wickets and open their account in the points table. Ajinkya Rahane made the chase easier with his fine knock. CSK regularly picked up wickets but they were 30-40 runs short tonight. Umesh Yadav has been adjudged as Player of the Match. Join us for the doubleheader tomorrow. Cheers.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings begin their campaign in IPL 2022 against IPL 2021 runner-ups Kolkata Knight Riders at iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai tonight.
Both teams are entering a new era as they are being led by a new captain.
First time in their history, CSK is going to enter an IPL season without MS Dhoni as their captain.
The legendary India cricketer - who led the franchise to four title victories - has decided to pass the baton.
The Yellow Brigade will now be led by India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and it will be interesting to see how CSK fares under his reign.
KKR, on the other hand, have a new captain in Shreyas Iyer and the India batter will be aiming to usher in a new era for the Kolkata-based franchise.
The two-time champions are hoping Iyer could bring back the golden days of KKR - when Gautam Gambhir guided them to title triumphs twice. In Shreyas, the franchise is looking for a long-time captaincy solution.
The two teams have a solid core of Indian cricketers, which is the most important facet for any franchise's success in this tournament.
Tonight's game will be all about finding the right combinations and getting a winning momentum.
CSK will be missing the services of Moeen Ali in the first game while their key fast-bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar might not be available in the first half. It will be interesting to see what playing eleven CSK fields tonight.
While KKR will have most of their key players tonight, barring a couple of overseas players, and would be banking upon the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell along with their captain for a confident performance.
In head to head stats, CSK have an edge over KKR as the Yellow Army has won 17 out of 26 games against the Men In Violet.
But that's all a thing of the past and this is a new season. Let's wait for the action tonight.
