Mitchell Santner IPL Profile

Mitchell Santner, born on February 5, 1992, in Hamilton, is an important player for the New Zealand national cricket team across all formats. Renowned for his adeptness as a left-arm orthodox spinner and a resourceful lower-order batter, Santner has been an asset to the Blackcaps.

Stepping into the limelight after the retirement of Kiwi legend Daniel Vettori, Santner was earmarked as a potential successor due to his promising performances in domestic cricket. With just 19 List A matches under his belt, Santner was fast-tracked into the senior squad, making his ODI and T20I debuts for the Blackcaps in 2015 against England. Remarkably, he also debuted in Test cricket in the same year, notably featuring in the inaugural day-night Test match against Australia.

Santner quickly established himself as one of the finest exponents of slow left-arm bowling in the limited-overs formats, earning acclaim for his ability to contain runs and claim crucial wickets. His standout moment came during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, where he played a crucial role in guiding New Zealand to the final with his bowling prowess and contributions with the bat.

The World Cup remained a significant stage for Santner, as he showcased his mettle once again during the 2019 edition. His impactful performance in the semi-final against India, where he stifled the opposition's middle order, proved instrumental in New Zealand's march to the final against England. Santner played 10 matches in the tournament and scored 72 runs whilst picking up 6 wickets. 

In November 2020, Santner reached another milestone in his career when he captained New Zealand for the first time in an international fixture, leading the team in a T20I match against the West Indies.

Beyond his international exploits, Santner has also made his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL) arena, representing the Chennai Super Kings since being acquired for a modest sum of INR 50 lakhs in the 2019 auctions.
