Prithvi Shaw is an Indian international cricketer, who plays in all cricket formats. This talented right-handed Indian opener was born on 9 November 1999 in Thane, Maharashtra.
Shaw gained fame at a young age with his marathon 546-run innings in the Harris Shield Trophy in 2012. Since then, his continuous brilliant performance brought a lot of achievement in his career.
In the 2017 Ranji Trophy, Shaw made his first-class debut for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu. He scored a century in the second innings and was a man of the match.
He followed it up with another ton during his debut match in the Duleep Trophy, he equaled Sachin Tendulkar's record of scoring hundreds in both Ranji and Duleep Trophy debut games.
Notably, Shaw became the captain of India during the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup with Rahul Dravid as coach. The duo successfully led the side to victory.
Shaw's impressive form in domestic and under-19 cricket made him sought-after talent at the IPL Auction 2018. He was bought by Delhi Capitals, who paid a jaw-dropping price of Rs 1.2 crore. Shaw even set a record of hitting six boundaries in an over in the IPL and became the second player to do so after Ajinkya Rahane.
In light of his standout performance for Delhi Capitals, the franchise retained him ahead of the IPL 2020, 2021, and 2023.
As far as international cricket is concernred, Shaw played his first Test against the West Indies in 2018, where he also scored his first century and became the youngest batter to do so in a debut match. In February 2020, he played in his first ODI for India against New Zealand.
Shaw's promising international career came to a halt late in 2020 when Australian pacers found fault in his technique. The rise of Shubman Gill at the same time and a cut throat competition for opening slots has kept the Mumbai batter away from Indian team for a while now with sporadic opportunities in second squad series.
Prithvi Shaw was suspended for 8 months by the BCCI in 2019 following a dope test failure for banned drug Terbutaline. However, the batsman escaped a lengthy ban after BCCI said that the banned substance entered his body through an unprescribed cough syrup, taken for respiratory tract infection.
Shaw also made headlines in May 2021 after police detained and questioned him for breaking the lockdown rules by taking a vacation in Goa.
