Abhishek Porel is an uncapped Indian cricketer, who was also a member of the India U-19 cricket team and is considered as one of the future stars of Indian cricket. He was born on October 17, 2002, in Chandannagar, West Bengal. Abhishek also played for Bengal Tigers at the state level and for the Durgapur Dazzlers in the Bengal T20 Premier League. Porel is well-known for playing cricket as a wicketkeeper-batsman for his side and bats left-handed while featuring frequently in the middle of the batting order.
Abhishek began playing domestic cricket in 2022 in the First Class format and made his debut in the Bengal vs Baroda match in Cuttack in February. Until the end of the 2022-23 season, he has participated in 16 First-class matches while scoring 695 runs, including six half-centuries.
The same year in November 2022, Porel made his List A debut against Puducherry in Ranchi and has played only 3 List A cricket matches by the end of the season, scoring 54 runs. His wicket-keeping skills and athletic display behind the stump have drawn him praise and comparison with Bengal veteran Wriddhiman Saha. Abhishek Porel soon made his T20 debut on October 2022 in the Bengal vs Odisha match in Lucknow. Porel has played in several regional-level cricket games with a stellar performance.
With such outstanding performances, Porel emerged as a noteworthy player and soon became a part of the IPL 2023 season. He joined the Delhi Capitals (DC) squad after Rishabh Pant got injured. And he made his IPL debut on April 2023 against Gujarat Titans team. In the match, he made 20 runs in 11 balls with the help of two sixes. The wicket-keeper took a stunning one-handed diving catch behind the stump against Mumbai Indians, earning him the recognition of the Indian fans.
