Suryakumar Ashok Yadav is an Indian international cricketer, who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket. Also known as 'SKY', Yadav was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, on September 14, 1990. He is a right-handed batsman and bowls right-arm off-break occasionally.
Yadav had a fantastic start to his career as he played his maiden List-A match against Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in February 2010 and scored a fast 41 runs off 37 balls, ranking second in the game. After a scintillating debut in a List-A match, he scored 73 runs in his first-class debut for Mumbai against Delhi in the 2010–11 Ranji season.
In the following Ranji season, he scored the most points of any member of his squad with 754 from nine games at an average of 68.54. In the 2011–12 season, the Mumbai batter scored an astounding 1000+ runs at the U23 level and took home the MA Chidambaram Trophy.
After his impressive domestic performance, Yadav became part of the 2012 IPL season after Mumbai Indians signed him. Due to the presence of seasoned players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Kieron Pollard, he was overlooked during the entire season.
He was dropped by the Mumbai franchise the next year and didn't play the subsequent season. Yadav was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014 with INR 70 lakhs. He was used as a lower-order finisher by KKR and became part of the franchise's IPL season title-winning squad as well.
Yadav came into the limelight in 2015 after scoring a decisive 20-ball 46 against Mumbai Indians. Since then, he became the KKR team's vice-captain and was a part of the squad till 2018. Suryakumar returned to Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL mega auction.
2020 turned out to be his breakthrough year with the franchise as he scored 400-plus runs for the first time in an IPL season. He won three IPL titles with the franchise and was named their vice-captain in 2023.
His ever-improving performance in IPL led to his international debut as he played his first T20I against England in March 2021. His ODI came in July 2021 against Sri Lanka. 2022 turned out to be his breakthrough season in T20s as the middle-order batter amassed 1164 runs. He subsequently became the first Indian to be World No. 1 in the format in October 2022.
