Varun Chakravarthy is an Indian cricketer who plays for the Indian national team internationally and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Even though he hails from Bidar in Karnataka, Varun has represented Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. Born on August 29 in 1991, he is 31 years of age ahead of the 2023 IPL season.
Varun Chakravarthy is a right-arm leg-break bowler who is very difficult to play because of his unorthodox bowling action. His bowling style resembles Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis and is also largely influenced by his KKR teammate Sunil Narine.
Chakravarthy emerged onto the scene following his sensational showings in TNPL and was called up by KKR in their net practice where he further improvised his game under the guidance of Sunil Narine. His exploits in TNPL saw him being snapped up by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping figure of Rs. 8.4 crore in 2019 by outbidding KKR. Kolkata Knight Riders eventually got their man in 2020 and he has since been with the Purple and Golds and has been a key weapon for the Kolkata franchise.
Chakravarthy's journey to the top of the game has been quite a story. He has been a late bloomer and only decided to become a full-time cricketer at the age of 25. He quit a high-profile architecture job to pursue his cricket career and has not looked back since.
Chakravarthy also made a cameo appearance in the 2014 Indian Tamil-language sports drama film Jeeva as a club cricketer. He got married to his childhood sweetheart Neha Khedekar in 2020.
In the 2023 IPL auctions, KKR secured the myster spinner for a whooping Rs 12.00 crore fee.
