Australian cricketer David Warner has created extraordinary batting feats throughout his career and is regarded among modern-day greats. Warner, nicknamed Lloyd, was born on October 27, 1986 in Paddington, Australia.
The southpaw made his historic international debut against South Africa in a T20 International in 2009. At the time of his debut, Warner became the first Australian to be chosen for a national squad in any format without playing first-class cricket. Warner's explosive and unorthodox batting technique soon made him crowd favourite and was made the vice-captain in Test and ODI matches in 2015.
He continued in the role till 2018 and continued to achieve several stellar records in all formats. Notably, he is the first Australian batsman to score 7 ODI centuries in a single calendar year, besides being the first to accumulate 1,500 runs in T20 international matches. Additionally, he became the fourth athlete to receive the Allan Border Medal more than once by winning it three times in 2016 (first), 2017 (second), and 2020 (third).
Warner is one of the most successful and consistent overseas players in IPL. He is the sole foreign player to score more than 5000 runs in the tournament, where he started his journey with the Delhi franchise in 2009 before making Australia debut and was associated with them till 2013. In the 2014 IPL auction, the swashbuckling Australian opener joined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and remained with the franchise till 2021.
He was handed the captaincy as well and led them to maiden title in 2016. In 2021, he was unceremoniously stripped off captaincy and dropped from the squad following a string of poor show by the franchise. He was subsequently not retain by the franchise following a much-documented fallout. In the 2022 auction, Delhi Capitals bought the left-handed batsman for Rs 6.25 crores and made him captain for 2023 season in absence of Rishabh Pant.
Known to be a man, who minces no words, the Aussie often quoted trouble. He was handed a match ban by Cricket Australia back in 2013 for a bar altercation with English rival player Joe Root. However, his darkest days came in 2018 during the infamous ball tampering scandal when he was found guilty of playing an active role in the incident by ICC and Australian board.
He was subsequently handed a year-long ban from all forms and levels of cricket and was never to be considered for leadership role again.
Warner started dating former Ironwoman Candice Falzon in 2013 and got married in 2015, and the duo have three daughters. The Warner family has been a popular figure on social media, especially among Indian fans.
