Sarfaraz Naushad Khan is a young Indian cricketer, who plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. He is a right-handed middle-order batsman and a leg-break bowler. Born on October 27, 1997, in Mumbai, India, Khan rose to prominence at a very young age. He came into the limelight at the age of 12 after he scored 439 runs off 421 balls, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's Harris Shield record from 1988.
Following his impressive performance, Sarfaraz got to be part of India's squad for the Under-19 quadrangular series in 2013. While playing a game against South Africa in the tournament, he scored 66 runs off 101 balls and helped to win the match. His stunning performance continued in the U-19 World Cup in 2014, where India finished fifth in the standings. Khan scored 211 runs — including two fifty-run innings — in six games for an average of 70.33.
Soon after, Sarfaraz started his Ranji career with Mumbai and played his first Ranji match against Bengal in 2014. He briefly played for Uttar Pradesh in 2015 before returning to Mumbai domestic team. Sarafaraz Khan eventually rose to prominence in the domestic Circuit 2020 onwards while scoring a triple century as well. The batter amassed a lot of runs while showing consistency. The run also put him reckoning for the Indian Test team but a maiden call-up is awaited.
After his several noteworthy performances, Sarfaraz got to play in the IPL franchise 2015 season after Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him. He was the youngest to feature in the IPL game so far and was associated with RCB for the next four seasons.
Sarfaraz shot to fame with his unbeaten knock of 45 off 21 Rajasthan Royals as well.
However, the player failed to break into the playing 11 amid high competition and was released by RCB. Khan was picked up by Kings Xi Punjab for INR 25 lakhs for IPL 2019 and was retained for the 2020 season after the batter showed promise with a half-century (67) against Chennai Super Kings. The batter saw limited opportunities over the next two seasons as his strike rate was often questioned and was subsequently released by the side ahead of the mega auction in 2022.
He was signed by Delhi Capitals in 2022 but his struggles in the format continued with just 10 matches coming his way across two seasons. Delhi Capitals also tried him as a wicketkeeper for the 2023 season in the absence of Rishabh Pant. The experiment, however, failed as the batter struggled behind the stumps and with the bat as well.
Controversy
Sarfaraz was always in highlight for his aggressive nature. Reportedly, his match fees for the 2014-15 season were suspended after he made rude gestures toward selectors at the end of a U19 game.
