Indian cricketer Shreyas Gopal is a leg spinner and also an excellent middle-order batsman in the the domestic circuit. Hailing from a sporting family background, Gopal got his love for cricket from his father Ramaswamy Gopal who used to play for clubs, and her mother Amitha, who was once a state-level volleyball player.
In the 2013-14 Ranji season, he began making a name with the bat but it was his subtle wrist spin that caught the eye. Although he did not make huge runs with the bat, he took 22 wickets in an important role during Karnataka’s win in the final. Among other things, this included a remarkable hat-trick against the Rest of India in the Irani Cup 2014.
This led to Mumbai Indians purchasing him at INR 10 lakh in the IPL auction of 2014. Although he did not have many chances, Gopal’s spin bowling skills were well recognized. Afterward, he moved to Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2018 season where he enjoyed a good time with them during his maiden campaign as he bagged 11 wickets including stand-out figures of 4-16 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Gopal reached the peak of his career in the IPL 2019 season with an impressive record of 20 wickets from 14 matches and an economy rate of just 7.22 runs per over. He notably gained a historic hat-trick against Royal Challengers Bangalore, dismissing top batsmen like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Marcus Stoinis. Subsequently, Gopal’s performance dipped slightly but this did not stop Mumbai Indians from reacquiring him for the 2024 Indian Premier League season.
