Mark Wood is a right-arm fast bowler who plays for England and Lucknow Super Giants in Indian Premier League. A career that was initially plagued by continual injuries has seen positive growth in recent years.
Born on 11 January 1990 in Ashington, Northumberland, Wood currently leads England's bowling unit in all forms of the game. His ability to upset the batsmen with a bowling speed of around 140+ Kmph makes him the X-Factor of the bowling attack. He can also bat in the lower order and has scored some vital runs for the team.
He started his career with Northumberland. However it was stint with Durham, domestically, where his talent was recognized. In his first season in 2011, he took 19 wickets. He also helped Durham win the county championship in 2013, claiming 27 wickets in the competition.
His domestic performances were rewarded with an international call-up. Wood received his first England call-up against West Indies in 2015 but he couldn’t play a match.
He finally made his ODI debut in the rain-affected match against Ireland where he claimed one wicket. He then made his Test debut in the same year against New Zealand in a series where he claimed 14 wickets.
Since then, Wood has been in and out of the national set-up but mostly due to injury issues. Although things have improved in the last few years.
Wood has appeared in just two editions of the Indian Premier League. He made his IPL debut in IPL 2018 for Chennai Super Kings but played only 1 match in that edition. He left the tournament midway to prepare himself for his national side. It took four more years before he came close to playing in IPL.
In 2022, IPL debutants Lucknow Super Giants paid staggering Rs 7.5 crore to secure his services. However, an injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season. In the first IPL 2023 match, Wood grabbed a five-wicket haul for Lucknow Super Giants against Delhi Capitals.
