Born on 17 September 1986 in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin is regarded as one of India's all-time great spin bowlers. He is popular for his carrom ball and leg spin. In recent years, the cricketer from Tamil Nadu has also developed his batting and has been a reliable batsman.
The wily off-spinner first came into the limelight due to his exploits with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. In the inaugural season of the tournament in 2008, he made his debut for the Chennai based-side. But in the first two years, he didn't have many chances to show off his talent. It was only in the 2010 season when he started to make an impact. From then on, he has been a regular feature in the IPL. His performances helped CSK win the IPL trophy twice in 2010 and 2011.
Ashwin spent six seasons with them before a ban for two years saw him drafted to Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016. He missed the 2017 season due to a sports hernia and returned to the tournament with Kings XI Punjab in 2018 where he was also named the captain. The mankading of Jos Buttler in 2019 season was one of Ashwin's most contentious IPL moments.
Ashwin was released by Punjab in the subsequent season and Delhi Capitals signed him in 2020. After two seasons, he was signed by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 5 crore rupees in the mega IPL 2022 Auction. Since 2010, Ashwin has consistently taken 10 or more wickets in a season and has a consistent economy of 6 to 7 which speaks about the quality he brings to the side.
Ashwin's father, Ravichandran, was also a cricketer and played cricket at the club level. The 6 feet 2 inches spinner is happily married to Prithi Narayanan. They are blessed with two kids.
Ashwin's international career has been flattering, to say the least. Apart from being a regular in all three formats of the game - over the years Ashwin has broken a number of records and is still growing. He is the fastest Indian bowler to reach 50-, 100-, 150-, 200-, 250-, 300-, 350-,400-, and 450- Test wickets. He is also the first Indian cricketer to score a century and take five wickets in the same Test match on two separate occasions. He won the ICC Test Player of the Year and ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2016.
