Azmatullah IPL Profile

Born on March 24, 2000, Azmatullah Omarzai hails from the Nurgal District in Kunar Province, eastern Afghanistan. The Afghan cricketer began his cricketing venture at the age of 14. Azmatullah made his first appearance on the international stage for the Afghanistan cricket team in January 2021 and marked his presence in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Originally a football player during his childhood, he later switched to cricket. He completed his high school education in Afghanistan. Azmatullah made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Ireland on January 21, 2021. Omarzai played his first T20 International (T20I) against Bangladesh on March 3, 2022, establishing himself as a versatile all-rounder.

Azmatullah Omarzai is known for his potential to swing the ball both ways and is particularly effective in taking wickets in the powerplay overs. Legendary Sachin Tendulkar once reserved the highest respect for Azmatullah Omarzai by comparing his wrist position with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is one of India’s premier swing-bowlers.

He brought up his maiden ODI hundred against Sri Lanka where he went on to essay 149 off 115 deliveries, laced with 13 fours and 6 sixes to his lofty standards of punching and counter-punching techniques. Unfortunately, his stupendous knock came in a losing cause as Afghans lost the game by 42 runs.

Azmatullah registered his name at the IPL 2024 auction for his base price of INR 50 lakh. Notably, Gujarat Titans (GT) secured his signature for his base price at the auction. The Afghan cricketer made his IPL debut against Mumbai Indians at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad where he accounted for two dismissals.
