Shamar Joseph was born on August 31, 1999 in Guyana. He represents Guyana in first-class matches and the West Indies in international cricket. Not many know that, Joseph worked as a security guard before stepping into the professional cricket scene. Joseph grew up idolising legendary West Indian bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, mimicking their techniques in his village tape ball games. He even practiced with unconventional materials like fruits and melted plastic bottles.
Joseph's first experience in organised cricket was with the Tucber Park Cricket Club, where he played in both first and second division matches. He became the first test cricketer from his hometown, Baracara. He received a bit of help and encouragement from former Guyanese cricketer Damion Vantull and there was no turning back since then. His impressive debut performance in Division 1 cricket propelled his career forward.
He made his first-class debut for Guyana against Barbados in February 2023 and showcased his talent with a memorable five-wicket haul against Windward Islands during the same season. Joseph's versatility was evident as he made his T20 debut for Guyana Amazon Warriors, ultimately winning the 2023 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with the team.
The start of 2024 turned out to be spectacular for Joseph in international cricket as his impactful debut in Test cricket came against Australia. It was nothing short of spectacular, where he claimed consecutive five-wicket hauls, including a stunning 7-68 spell in the second innings of the second Test at the Gabba, helping the West Indies secure their first victory in Australia in 27 years.
Joseph was drafted by Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League and later by Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League as replacement for pacer Mark Wood for INR 3 crore. He made his IPL debut against KKR and bowled one of the longest overs in IPL history, bowling 10 balls, conceding 22 runs in an over. He had a poor start to his IPL career by giving away 47 runs off his four overs without a wicket in LSG's defeat to KKR.
