Gerald Coetzee was born on October 2, 2000. He operates as a right-arm fast bowler who is known for his pace, aggressive style, and potential to generate bounce and swing.
The South African-born cricketer is known for his animated celebrations after claiming wickets, often reminding fans and commentators of the former South African paceman Dale Steyn due to similar expressive body language.
Gerald Coetzee debuted in Test and ODI cricket against West Indies and played his first T20I against Australia within the same year. In December 2019, he was selected for South Africa's team for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
On May 1, 2021, he joined the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a replacement for Liam Livingstone. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to don the RR outfit in that season as he was warming the bench before he was released by the franchise.
A few years later, he was named in South Africa's squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which was his first-ever World Cup tournament. The right-arm fast bowler sneaked into the team as one of the important pacemen in the wake of injuries to senior pacers namely Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala.
Gerald Coetzee quickly became an integral part of South Africa's pace attack during the World Cup, often coming in as the second or third change bowler. He proved especially productive in the middle overs, taking key wickets when it mattered the most.
Notably, he finished the World Cup tournament as South Africa's top wicket-taker, accounting for 20 dismissals in 8 matches. He registered his name at the IPL 2024 auction for his base price of INR 2 crore and was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for INR 5 crores.
